Traditional Irish Brown Bread

If you have ever been to Ireland you will have enjoyed the brown bread that almost all restaurants serve with your meal. Often it is paired with smoked salmon for an appetizer/starter. I found this recipe years ago and it is remarkably similar to the brown bread I had in Ireland. Enjoy.

Traditional Irish Brown Bread

2     Cups whole wheat flour                          2    Cups Buttermilk

1     Cup white flour                                       2    Teaspoons Baking Soda

1/2  Cup Sugar

1     Teaspoon Salt 

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease a 9” x 5” loaf pan. Stir together flours, sugar, and salt. Combine buttermilk and baking soda. Stir into flour mixture. Turn into loaf pan and place in oven. Immediately turn heat down to 350 degrees. Check in 50 minutes and continue baking until toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Cool for 5-10 minutes and then turn out on rack to cool
